Grown in the tropical regions of South India, turmeric is used in drug and cosmetic industries as it cures ailments and other skin diseases. A useful dye used medicinally for external application, it is taken internally as a stimulant. Turmeric is used for religious and ceremonial occasions.
Available either in the form of dry rhizomes or in the form of powder with more than 5% Curcumin contents, it comes in lemon yellow, orange or orange yellow colors. The broad varieties available with us are Allepey (Kerala), Lokhandi (Maharashtra), Duggirala (Andhra Pradesh).
